Stars Above Us 2019
Die Sterne xc3xbcber uns (original title)
1h 41min | Drama | 14 November 2019 (Germany)

Storyline:

The story of a single mother struggling to regain control of her life. While living rough in a forest she fights to find a place in the world for her and her son, but her earnest attempts are continually thwarted.

User review:

A single mother, who has become homeless due to a chain of unfortunate circumstances, lives with her son in a tiny tent on the outskirts of Cologne. While she works as a flight attendant during the trial period, her son apparently goes to school as normal, which forces both of them to constantly play hide-and-seek with their surroundings. Outstandingly played, rousing drama about the persistent fight against social decline and the impending disintegration of a family. The film does not want to investigate the causes, but tells with close proximity to the characters and dynamic hand-held camera and highly authentically about oppressive living conditions.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, Melli and her son Ben find themselves homeless and sleeping in the woods. Melli is looking for a new flat and having a hard time qualifying for one. She has started a new job working as flight attendant but is still in the probationary period and hasn’t gotten paid yet. Meanwhile, the Youth Welfare Office is looking into her case. The last thing she wants to do is have the boy taken away from her, and she is so close, yet so far away from living a normal life again. This is the premise of the story. I liked it but didn’t find it as moving as I would have liked. If they had made the threat of losing her son suspenseful than it would have made a big difference in my opinion.
