Mes Petites Amoureuses 1974
Mes petites amoureuses (original title)
2h 3min | Drama | 18 December 1974 (France)

Storyline:

A study of minor events in the adolescence of a boy growing up in small towns. Daniel lives with his grandmother and, after one year of high school, has to go to live with his mother in the south of France. She is a seamstress living in a tiny apartment with her lover Jose, a Spanish farm worker. Daniel would like to continue school, but his mother cannot afford it, so she sends him to work as an apprentice in a moped repair shop. Daniel wiles away his time in the shop, and learns about girls from the other boys in town. When he returns to visit his grandmother next year, it is obvious that he has grown up faster than his old friends.

User review:

Small (though long), quiet (literally – there is no music score, for example), observant (like its lead), nostalgic coming-of-age tale. Not much plot, just a series of daily-life blackout vignettes. It definitely has its boring moments, but also some wonderful ones, like the boy getting his first kiss in a movie theater playing “Pandora And The Flying Dutchman”. Successfully captures both small-town and country atmosphere, thanks in large part to Nestor Almendros’ beautiful cinematography.

This movie is nice to have, but it feels a bit undeveloped, especially the end is abrupt and leaving me unsatisfied. For me this movie has two interesting connections: first it is Martin Loeb’s debut, who will be the protagonist in the scandal movie “La maladolescenza” a couple of years later. In “Mes petites amoureuses “ he shows already his potential, but he will come to full “exposure” in “La maladolescenza” together with Eva Ionescu and Laura Wendel. Secondly it is directed by Jean Eustache who is known for his magnum opus “La maman et la putain”, which is the movie that is referred to in a the recent French movie “L’amour debout” (Love blooms) featuring a mature Pascal Cervo who surprised me in his debut “Les amoureux”. All movies I mention here (except La maman et la putain) happen to be in DVDbay’s catalogue!
