Real Boy 2016
1h 12min | Documentary, Family, Music | 2016 (USA)
Storyline:
REAL BOY is an intimate story of a family in transition. As 19-year-old Bennett Wallace navigates early sobriety, late adolescence, and the evolution of his gender identity, his mother makes her own transformation from resistance to acceptance of her trans son. Along the way, both mother and son find support in their communities, reminding us that families are not only given, but chosen.
User review:
This documentary manages to keep all the balls in the air the whole way through. It balances differing and evolving viewpoints on its key issue without dehumanizing or vilifying anyone. It shows true struggle without becoming maudlin and true triumph without becoming trite. It is an incredibly human experience that doesn’t force its message about dealing with both physical and emotional transformation. Instead, it challenges its audiences perceptions gently yet persistently, all while breaking down the barriers of what “gender” and “family” may mean.
